Throughout August, the Metropolitan Police is supporting the Home Office's Summer Surrender Scheme, providing opportunities for members of the public to safely and anonymously dispose of unwanted knives and bladed articles. Running from the 6th August to 31st August 2026, the initiative aims to reduce the number of knives in circulation and help prevent knife-related violence by offering secure disposal locations across London. Residents who have unwanted knives at home are encouraged to take this opportunity to remove them from their households and safely dispose of them. Every knife surrendered through the scheme is securely collected and transported to the Metropolitan Police storage facility at Belvedere. There, the knives are processed and destroyed by European Metal Recycling (EMR). The recycled metal is then donated to Steel Warriors, a charity that transforms surrendered weapons into free outdoor calisthenics gyms in communities across the UK, creating positive spaces for young people and promoting healthier lifestyles. Every knife surrendered is one less weapon that could fall into the wrong hands.
